system
for
teachers
to
communicate
with
each
other
and

workshop
facilitators
directly
using
the
new

TECH
SPECS

customized

server-side
Perl
script
similar
to
the
one
we
used
for
the
Port
Townsend
Fly
Shop
discussion
board.
This
system
creates
new
html
pages
for
each
discussion
board
entry.
As
the
discussion
board
grows
and
the
site
is
re-submitted
to
search
engines
using
the
PALMATEC

these
new

are

based

company
was
sold
in
July
of
2003,
PALMATEC
began
working
with
the
new
owners
to
update
the
site's
functionality
and
marketing
strategy
to
support
their
expanded
mission.
THE
CHALLENGE
The
new
owner--based
in
Garfield,
New
Jersey--liked
their
existing
online
identity
and
wanted
to
leverage
their
current
web
traffic
to
increase
sales.
Because
of
the
type
of
product,
it
can
only
be
shipped
via
UPS
Ground.
In
addition
to
a
standard
e-commerce
system,
the
TruGarde.com
shopping
cart
needed
to
calculate
shipping
charges
based
on
the
up-to-the-minute
UPS
ground
rates.
THE
SOLUTION
Working
with
the
UPS
E-Commerce
Division,
PALMATEC
programmers
developed
a
custom
script
to
calculate
shipping
for
each
order
based
on
the
buyer's
zip
code,
total
order
weight,
and
current
UPS
rates
in
real-time.
The
resulting
system
seamlessly
communicates
with
the
UPS
database
and
returns
the
correct
rate
to
the
secure
server
during
the
checkout
process.
